Title: Echo
Medium: Installation of archived and collected Nigerian newspapers (2018) with digitally printed artwork on wall, Ankara fabric floor covering, hanging natural coral beads, and small Afro combs.
Description: Echo is an installation that draws from Joseph’s ongoing collection of Nigerian newspapers, sourced since 2020 but with articles dating back to 2018. By revisiting these archives, Joseph “un-archives” cultural memories, preserving elements of displaced or forgotten heritage. Echo explores themes of migration, cultural transformation, and the fusion of old and new identities in new environments.
Title: Circulate
Medium: Sculptures cast from original alumbro metal salvaged from the Cutty Sark boat (1963).
Description: In Circulate, Joseph examines the transient experiences of migrants, probing questions of identity, adaptation, and continuity. The sculptures reflect the fragments of self that may be left behind or altered in the journey of integration. Through these works, Joseph raises thought-provoking questions about the cultural essence carried across generations and the evolving identity of migrant communities.
Title: We Go Carry Am
Medium: UV printing and stitching on distressed white sandbags.
Description: Celebrating the resilience and pride of second-generation Nigerian migrants, We Go Carry Am captures the cultural richness expressed through fashion, music, and identity. This work celebrates the strength and pride within young Black men and women navigating dual identities, emphasising the beauty and strength they draw from their heritage. The piece playfully and vibrantly acknowledges the reclamation and reshaping of Nigerian identity by the second-generation diaspora.
